Jim Pierson & I met at the Hiwassee Refuge not far out of Dayton, Tennessee to take images of the Sandhill Cranes and White Pelicans. On this particular day, there was just a handful of photographers setup and we pretty much had the premium spot to ourselves. Needless to say, it didn't make us unhappy about not being crowded.
Another great feature of the view platform is that it's close to your vehicle. This means you didn't have to have all of your gear at your feet. If we needed something it was a 30-second walk to our vehicles.
There were lots of birds coming and going and I was doing the first shoot with my new Tamron 150-600 V2 lens. I wasn't used to it and I had more misses than hits on nailing focus on the moving birds. However, I did manage to get a few decent shots.
It was a cool breezy morning and a good jacket and hoody felt great. After we'd been there for a while more photographers and bird watchers started drifting in and with Covid looming large we decided to call it a day.
